Q: What is an IMAX film? An “IMAX” film is a “large format” film, meaning IMAX uses 15-perforation, 70mm film to create images of incredible sharpness. The 15/70 frame is 10 times larger than the 35mm used in regular theatres. This makes it the largest commercial film ever invented. IMAX large format film is so strong it could be used to tow your car! The film is projected on a screen 60 feet tall and 80 feet wide and emits 12,000 watts of sound. Light from the 15,000-watt lamp of some IMAX projectors is so bright that, if one were operated on the moon, people on Earth could see it with the naked eye.
Q: Are the films in 3D? Most of our films are 3D, but not all IMAX films are 3D. IMAX films are considered “large format” films and they can be seen in 2D and 3D.
Q: What makes a film 3D? The IMAX 3D projector projects two separate images onto the screen and special polarized 3D glasses allow your brain to fuse the two images together to make a single, pristine, larger-than-life three-dimensional image.
Q: Will we get sick from the 3D effects? This is subjective. If you typically have motion sickness, you may become ill from watching a 3D presentation.
Q: Do the seats move? No. This theatre does not have motion seats with the presentation.
Q: Will we get wet? No. This theatre does not have water misters.
Q: How long are the movies? The average film length is approximately 45 minutes. Hollywood films, such as The Dark Knight, are longer and cost more.
Q: Which movies are the best? This is subjective based on each individual’s topic preference. Not every film will please everybody.
Q: Are your films appropriate for all ages? Yes, our films are considered to be G or PG rated. We recommend that children be older than 2 years of age to attend an IMAX movie. Our 12,000 watts of sound may be overwhelming for babies and toddlers, causing them to cry during the presentation.
Q: Are children tickets free? Children ages 3 and under are free, but they must sit on a parent’s lap since they will not have a ticket for a seat.
Q: Are strollers allowed in the auditorium? No, per fire code regulations, strollers must be parked next to the stairs on the first floor.
Q: Will my child get scared? This is subjective. While the film content may not be scary, children may become scared by the 3D and/or large format effects. Keep in mind that the screen is 60 feet high and 80 feet wide with 12,000 watts of sound.
Q: How often do you change your films? Approximately 1-2 times per year.
Q: Do you show Hollywood films? If not, why. We may on occasion show Hollywood films, but we may not always be able to do so. This is mostly due to the “rules” of Hollywood. The other theatres in Myrtle Beach have more screens than we do and they have first choice in choosing Hollywood films for their screens. Due to this, we do not have “clearance” to play the same films when they do.
Q: Where do we get the 3D glasses? Do we have to pay for them? Can we keep them and/or buy them? You will receive your 3D glasses upon entering the auditorium. If your glasses appear to be dirty, please notify an employee. The glasses are washed and sanitized in a hot water (180 degrees) dishwasher for re-use after every show. Sometimes water spots may appear. We ask that you return the glasses in the glass receptacles at the bottom of the auditorium when you exit. They are not good outside of the theatre. At this time we do not sell glasses.
Q: May we take pictures during a film or use our video camera at all to remember the experience? The use of cameras and video cameras in the theater are prohibited by law and this would also be distracting to other guests. Furthermore, it is not possible to capture a 3D image with a camera or video camera.
Q: What else can we do at Broadway at the Beach? There is much to do at Broadway at the Beach with so many restaurants, stores and attractions. For more information, visit www.broadwayatthebeach.com
Q: Who owns/operates the theatre? The IMAX 3D Myrtle Beach is owned and operated by Destination Cinema, Inc. (DCI). DCI also owns and operates theatres in California (Hearst Castle), Arizona (Grand Canyon), Niagara Falls (Canada and New York) and Victoria, BC Canada (British Columbia Museum).
